Communities of practice in the 21st-century organization; Foreword to the CEFRIO guidebook

It is always an honor to be asked to write a foreword to a major piece of work in one’s specialty. But sometimes it takes on a very personal significance as it does for me when I witness theenergy, time, and resources CEFRIO and its partners have invested in expanding ourunderstanding of communities of practice. When my colleague Jean Lave and I coined the term inthe late 80’s in our quest for a new theory of learning, we had no idea that the concept wouldhave the impact it is having today; let alone that we would be writing forewords to reports of thisscope. We were merely hoping to contribute something useful to the debate on education. Asturned out, the concept has influenced the thinking of both researchers and practitioners in asurprisingly wide range of fields.
